What are some concepts or language we use when working on social skills?

When working on Social Communication, we ask our students to check in, notice, and connect!  These skills are supported by a student's emotional regulation, social attention, and motivation to engage.  It is important for young students to develop an ability to notice and recognize their own internal signals, as well as, to notice and interpret non-verbal communication so that they are able to engage with their environment. In school, being able to engage with the people and things in their in environment supports the academic expectations that students collaborate and work within a variety of group settings. Students often hear us saying .....

* What's the what? (big picture of the moment)

          I'm thinking about....

Are you thinking about the group?

*I notice so I can connect and share an idea!

*Check-in....

What are you feeling right now?....

Am I thinking about the what?....

          Am I distracted?.....

*Notice....

What kind of a moment is it?...... (learning moment, cool moment, calming moment)

          What's the mood?.....

          Who's the leader/speaker?.....

It is important to speak to your student's therapist, for more individualized information.
