Social Studies
Social Studies education is committed to understanding ourselves, our communities, and our society through multiple lenses of history, geography, economics, civics, and the social sciences. A key objective of our department is to equip students with the skills necessary for intelligent and conscientious participation as citizens in our democratic society.
Students at Duxbury Middle and High School will engage in authentic learning experiences. Our classes will enable students to become critical readers, write effectively, analyze primary and secondary sources, explore other cultures, examine history through diverse perspectives, incorporate current events, and understand events from a holistic perspective.
Our curriculum is designed to engage students in inquiry, reading, research, discussion, writing, and making presentations. These activities are the heart of the Massachusetts Framework’s Standards for History and Social Science Practice. These skills provide students with numerous opportunities to practice social studies skills and gain new insights. As 21st-century students, we will empower them to become informed citizens who understand the interconnected social, political, and cultural systems of the world.
