Social Studies

Social Studies Education at Duxbury Middle and High School

Social Studies education is committed to understanding ourselves, our communities, and our society through multiple lenses of history, geography, economics, civics, and the social sciences.  An essential goal of our department is to help prepare students for intelligent and conscientious participation as citizens in our democratic society.

Students at Duxbury Middle and High School will engage in authentic learning experiences.  Our classes will allow students to become critical readers, write effectively, analyze primary and secondary sources, discover other cultures, examine history through diverse perspectives, incorporate current events, and understand events using a holistic lens.

Our curriculum is designed for students to engage in inquiry, reading, research, discussion, writing, and making presentations.  These activities are the heart of the Massachusetts Framework’s Standards for History and Social Science Practice.  These skills allow students to practice social studies skills and gain new understandings.  As a student of the 21st century, our students will be empowered citizens who understand the world's interconnected social, political, and cultural systems.
