With so many changes, here is a FAQ to help answer your questions.
Q. Where is my bus stop?
A. Please look-up your bus stop on our web page for Bus Routes
. Please note that many of the bus routes have had significant changes and more than one bus may go into one area. Check for the stop closest to your home address.
Q. I can't find my stop/My stop looks too far away. Who do I contact?
A. Contact Misty Flynn at First Student at 781-585-0240. She will be able to assist you.
Q. I have not registered. What is the deadline?
A. The deadline to register is June 15th of every year. This is because First Student needs to have time to establish bus routes each year. The routes are based on which students are registered for the bus by that date. After June 15th there is a late fee. No registrations will be accepted after September 15, 2013 for current students.
Q. What is the fee?
A. If you register by June 15th the fee to register is $250 per student, with a family cap of $500. From June 15, 2013 - June 30, 2013 the fee is $270 per student, with a family cap of $540. From July 1, 2013 on, the fee is $300 per student, with a family cap of $600.
Q. I cannot afford the bus fee. What do I do?
A. First you must apply for Free & Reduced Lunch. If you are approved, you do not owe the bus fee. If you are denied, you may write a letter of hardship to the attention of the Business Manager. You must be denied Free & Reduced Lunch before your circumstance will be considered. Please include your name, the names of your children, the grades they are in, your extenuating circumstance, your address and phone number. The Business Office will normally contact you within 2 business days.
Q. Why is there a fee due for some residents?
A. We are required by law to provide transportation for students in grades K-6 who live more than 2 miles from their school. Students in grades K-6 whose primary home address is within 2 miles shortest driving distance from Chandler School (for grades K-2) at 93 Chandler Street or Alden/DMS using 75 Alden Street as the destination address (for grades 3-6) are required to pay for bus transportation. Students in grades 7-12 pay for bus transportation regardless of distance. Students who have been approved for Free & Reduced Lunch do not owe the bus fee.
Q. I have a safety concern for my bus stop. What do I do?
A. The safety of the students is a shared responsibility between the parents and the school. The parent is responsible for the safety of their child until they board the bus in the morning and when they depart the bus in the afternoon. The school is responsible for the student's safety once they step on the bus. E-mail your safety concern to firstname.lastname@example.org
. Your concern will be logged and the Safety Officer will drive to the bus stop to determine if there are any safety issues that would necessitate adding or moving a bus stop based on your home address and concern.
Q. Why have the bus stops been changed?
A. Bus stops are based on many factors including the students who are registered for bus transportation, matching bus arrival and departure times between all three routes (Chandler, Alden and DMS/DHS), the distance and timing of routes, and collection points based on the need for that area.
Q. My child has lost their bus pass/I have thrown out my bus pass. What do I do?
A. Please come into the Business Office with a check for the replacement fee and sign the Bus Pass Replacement Request sheet. The first lost bus pass fee is $5 and replacements thereafter are $25. We do log all replaced bus passes. We reprint bus passes at the end of each week. Your child will be given a bus ticket for specific dates to ride the bus until your pass is printed.
Q. Why can't you just reprint my bus pass while I wait?
A. The process to reprint a bus pass is not a quick one. We collect the names on the Bus Pass Replacement Request sheet and batch process the reprints at the end of the week. They will be mailed to your home.
