The DMS/DHS Social Studies Department’s mission in alignment with the state of Massachusetts is to prepare students to have the knowledge and skills to become thoughtful and active participants in a democratic society and a complex world.  One step toward meeting this is introducing students to reasoned and dispassionate approaches to analyzing contemporary social and political issues. Students will be prepared to make informed civic choices and assume their responsibility for strengthening equality, justice, and liberty in and beyond their community.  We offer various courses designed to prepare students to manage not merely static information in textbooks but also with the barrage of information received daily. These goals are met by mastering critical concepts from the social sciences and developing the skills necessary for applying those concepts to the real world.
