WELCOME Ms. Kelly's and Ms. Riser's 5th Grade Families!!!

I wanted to introduce myself to you all.  My name is Jenny Easter Nelson, and I am the Special Educator who will be Co-Teaching with Ms. Kelly and Ms. Riser this year.  This is my 37th year as an educator.  I received my B.S. in Elementary Education at the University of Vermont and worked with Kindergarten and Early Childhood students in Brookline for a number of years in the 1980's.  I then moved to Boulder, Colorado and went to the University of Colorado where I received my Master's Degree in Reading.  After that, I moved back East (missed the ocean a lot!) and did Title One Reading work with Elementary aged students in grades 1-5 in Somersworth, NH in the early 1990's. During that time, the education bug bit me again, and I decided to go to the University of New Hampshire, where I received a Master's Degree in Counseling.

At that time, I also got certified in Special Education, and that is what brought me to the Duxbury Public Schools twenty-two years ago.  I was a Special Educator in the sixth grade at DMS for my first six years, then moved to Alden School, and have worked here happily for the past 15 years. It has been a wonderful journey so far! My husband, Derrick Nelson teaches in the Science Department at Duxbury High School.  We live in Marshfield and have two wonderful children, Dell in the 12th grade and Sarah in the 10th grade at Marshfield High School.

Ms.Kelly, Ms. Riser and I want to make sure that you are aware that if you need to send an e-mail regarding information about your child, please mail it to both myself and the classroom teacher, and we will get back to you as soon as we are able.  Looking forward to a very exciting in-person learning year!                                                                                                                                                      Sincerely,

                                                                                   Jenny Easter Nelson

      Poem of the Month

                                        The Starfish
There was a young man walking down a deserted beach just before dawn.
In the distance he saw a frail old man.
As he approached the old man, he saw him picking up stranded starfish
and throwing them back into the sea.
The young man gazed in wonder as the old man again threw the small starfish from
    the sand to the water.
He asked, "Old man, why do you spend so much energy doing what seems to be
    a waste of time?"
The old man explained that the stranded starfish would die if left in the morning sun.
"But there must be thousands of beaches and millions of starfish!" exclaimed the
young man.  "How can you make a difference?
The old man looked at the small starfish in his hand and as he threw it to the safety
of the sea, he said, "It makes a difference to this one!
